About this Book?
This book can be seen as a ‘sister’ book to Nuclear Weapons and International Law (3rd edition) published in 2020 (referred to as NWIL3) see the front cover of NWIL3 further down.
NWIL3 is the 3rd edition of the book originally published as The Bomb and the Law in 1989 after the London Nuclear Warfare Tribunal (LNWT) in 1985
The Bomb and the Law went out of print quite quickly and there were many requests for it to be made available again The International Court of Justice delivered its Advisory Opinion in 1996 about the illegality of nuclear weapons There had been other developments, so The Bomb and the Law (NWIL1) was renamed to Nuclear Weapons and International Law, updated substantially, for publication in 2015 (NWIL2).
Since 2015 a lot has happened: the nuclear weapons states continue their cynical disregard for international law; civil society has continued the task of pursuing nuclear disarmament; yet again, the ICJ let down humanity in its failure to handle properly the Republic of the Marshall Islands cases against the nuclear weapons states. In 2017, civil society, helped by a majority of nation states in the United Nations General Assembly, negotiated successfully a Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) for which the International Campaign to Ban Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) received the Nobel Peace Prize. NWIL3 was published in 2020.
